DR PETER SHERIDAN AM BDS MDS FICD FADI
Peter Sheridan has been in dental practice in Macquarie Street, Sydney for some 50 years. In this time he has been involved in a number of dental areas lecturing on sedation, mercury toxicology and use of hygienists. He has a Masters degree in Preventive Dentistry and is also a Fellow of the International College of Dentists and a fellow of the International Academy of Dentistry. He is the foremost dental clinical photographer in Australia and gives various courses and lectures to dentists, specialist groups and postgraduate students through the University of Sydney and the Australian Dental Association’s Continuing Professional Development Programme. In 2017 Quintessence Publishing USA published Peter's textbook CLINICAL PHOTOGRAPHY IN DENTISTRY - A New Perspective. In 2023 Peter published an 84 page surgery primer - A GUIDE TO DENTAL CLINICAL PHOTOGRAPHY
In 2001 he received an Order of Australia (AM) from the government for his work in the Multiple Sclerosis field. He was Senior Vice-President of the Multiple Sclerosis International Federation and helped empower people affected by MS through enhanced information resources. In 1994 he developed the first international health charity website..'The World of MS' which still functions some 26 years later.
An avid photographer his images have been used by the National Gallery of Victoria, the Sydney Morning Herald and many specialist collecting publications. In 2011 he was accredited by the Australian Institute of Professional Photography. He has a number of awards and commissions for his images.
Peter and his wife Jan are serious collectors of Art Deco. Elements of their collection has been seen on the ABC collectors and in a number of major museum and gallery exhibitions. In 2017 the National Gallery of Victoria exhibited 40 of Peter's radios in an exhibition about Australia in the 1930s. He has published and lectured extensively in Australia and internationally on many areas of Art Deco design and collecting. Peter and Jan are both Committee members of the Art Deco and Modernism Society pf Australia.
Peter published a very successful book RADIO DAYS - Australian Bakelite Radios in 2008 for which he did all the photography, text and design work. The book was short-listed for a Galley Book Club Design award and made one of Borders’ Beautiful Books of 2008. It has sold over 2500 copies.
In 2014 he authored DECO RADIO - The most beautiful radios ever made. This was published in the USA by Schiffer Publishing, incorporating his photography, text and design work. This book tells the forgotten story of the influence of famous industrial designers on radio design in the early 1930s which brought Art Deco styling , colour and machine age influences to radio cabinet design.
Peter published SYDNEY ART DECO in 2019 which is the first comprehensive catalogue on Sydney's Art Deco architectural heritage. With 432 pages and 1000 photographs (800 contemporary taken by Peter and 200 archival images) the book was sold out in 8 months and is being reprinted. It has been highly acclaimed and long-listed for the Indie Book Awards of 2020.
In 2021 Peter released SYDNEY ART DECO & MODERNISM WALKS -Potts Point & Elizabeth Bay exposing the importance of this tiny but extraordinary locality in Sydney as a national treasure. This 200 page handbook contains maps, walking guide and descriptions of 75 Art Deco and 32 Modernist buildings in the area including 5 by Emil Sodersten and 5 by Harry Seidler.
COLLECTING ART DECO - From Fine Art to Ephemera was released in 2023 and highlights some 700 pieces from Peter and Jan's world famous collection of Art Deco
Peter is the founder/chairman of the POTTS POINT PRESERVATION GROUP which is dedicated to preserving the vibrant and accessible neighbourhoods of Potts Point, Elizabeth Bay and Kings Cross that together uniquely embrace the architectural and social history of Sydney
