Sydney Art Deco book review, 6 May 2019
Review of Peter Sheridan's Sydney Art Deco, 2019, 432 pps. A photographic survey of Sydney Art Deco as “the first global style movement” with a wide frame of reference from architecture to homewares. Sheridan describes it as a “style” rather than a methodology or a system of design problem-solving. This allows him to focus on his imagery and descriptions in the text rather than analysis.
One of the most valuable features of the book is the authors’ expanded documentation of building types that have been somewhat overlooked in earlier surveys. Amongst his groupings are petrol stations, factories, civic amenities such as bus shelters, gateways, bandstands, cemetery monuments and crematoria. The book comes with an exhaustive index and walking tour maps of Sydney’s Central Business District (34 sites) as well as Sheridan’s favoured precinct of Potts Point, Elizabeth Bay and Rushcutters Bay (36 sites)
While other Australian surveys of interwar Art Deco and Moderne architecture may have provided more textual analysis of the style and methodology of this rich era, the photography of Sheridan’s book Sydney Art Deco takes the enthusiast further afield by documenting an extraordinary range of architecture and design.

DECO RADIO 2014

“Peter Sheridan’s new book is called Deco Radio – and it’s a beauty. These radios you’ve photographed for your book are exquisite, they are sensationally good looking. I was swept away by these radios. I work in the industry and I hadn’t seen anything like these radios until I opened your book. They are breathtakingly beautiful objects.”
Margaret Throsby- Midday Conversation : ABC Classic FM 26/11/2014
As well as telling the stories behind their evolution, Sheridan has done a masterful job of capturing their simplicity and elegance in 380 pictures
Financial Review Magazine 14/11/2014
A superb new book. This book is a major work and deserves to be on the bookshelf of anyone interested in 20th century design. Deco Radio pays attention to detail in stories of design, manufacture and marketing of the radios and is enhanced by excellent photography and layout, all the work of the author. And what about the radios, all shown in glorious colour in the Radio Gallery section. What a treasure trove from around the globe, some accompanied by archival photos and advertisements.
Robin Grow President Art Deco & Modernism Society of Australia ( Spirit of Progress, Journal of Art Deco & Modernist Society Australia p7 Spring Issue 2014)
This is a serious contender for the best coffee-table book on radio ever printed. Not just aimed at the wireless enthusiast, Decoradio succeeds at attracting art-deco followers, people with an interest in beautiful objects and the early history of industrial design. Decoradio as it happens, is jam–packed with beautiful objects. The subtitle says it all: the most beautiful radios ever made. I recommend this book.
Carl Glover, Editor, Bulletin, British Vintage Wireless Society (2014)
A beautiful and informative book. Deco Radio reveals the fascinating story behind these beautiful radios and looks at the influence Art Deco and Industrial Design had on the evolution of radio styling in the 1930s and 1940s

A Look Inside Kathleen Skolnik, Editor Journal of Chicago Art Deco Society
If you’ve a friend who has everything and you can never think of a gift then I may have a solution for you. It’s a book called Deco Radio –the most beautiful radios ever made. It is an incredible photo gallery and a wonderful collectors item. What a book! Some of the most incredible photos and some wonderful history of this incredible medium.
Chris Smith 2GB Radio …The Golden Days of Radio 31/10/2014
Sheridan’s lively text is a timely reminder of how central radio was to the lives of people around the world back in the early twentieth century….Sheridan has photographed the radios with loving care in close-up, so that every feature is shown to best advantage. They have sexy curves, voluptuous bodies and come in a wide range of colours – forget about bakelite brown, the greens and reds really pop. Shot against deep dramatic black they gleam on the page like jewels. Their shapes reflect what was happening in industrial design, fashion and popular culture with style and humour. He has some sound advice for aspiring collectors which he shares in the text that punctuates this sleek but hefty coffee table book. Anyone with a nostalgic interest or enthusiasm for the glorious heyday of art deco and its sleek modernity will find this irresistible.
